New members wanted

The ASSFN is actively looking for new members. At a time when interest in stereotactic techniques has never been higher, we feel that many more neurosurgeons could benefit from active membership in the ASSFN. All ASSFN members are automatically members of the Joint Section for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, as long as the individual is also a member of the CNS or the AANS.

Thanks to the incorporation of frame-based and frameless image guidance into routine training and practice, many more of our colleagues perform some sort of stereotactic surgery (whether they realize it or not) than might have been the case only a decade ago. This would include stereotactic radiosurgery, performed in many centers using gamma knife or Linac technology. Most of these procedures are most likely done today by neurosurgeons without specialized training. As nonablative surgery for movement disorders and other conditions becomes more commonplace, functional neurosurgery is becoming less of an esoteric art. To join the ASSFN, download the membership application from this website and follow the instructions provided on it.

Categories of membership and member benefits

The four different types of ASSFN memberships are: Active member (practicing neurosurgeons) Resident/Fellow member, Senior member (Neurosurgeons retired from active practice who are over 65), and Associate member (non-neurosurgeons).

The benefits of active membership include:

  • Membership in the AANS/CNS Section on Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery
  • Membership in the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery
  • Reduced fees for the biennial ASSFN meetings
  • Subscription to Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (including on-line access)
The benefits of all other membership categories are:
  • Membership in the AANS/CNS Section on Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery
  • Reduced fees for the biennial ASSFN meetings
  • Eligibility to subscribe to Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (including on-line access) at the reduced rate of $135.
The society journal, Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery

As in prior years, active members will automatically receive the journal, Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, as part of their membership dues. Starting in 2005, members in all other categories who wish to receive Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery are eligible for a reduced subscription rate ($135). To obtain this, Residents/fellow, Seniors and Associate ASSFN members should contact the AANS directly (Mr. Ron Engelbreit, AANS, 555 Meadowbrook Drive, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008, telephone # 847-378-0509).

Online access to the journal. Starting this year, subscriptions to Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery will include on-line access as well as the hard copy. The publisher of the journal, Karger Inc., has said that in early 2005, they will contact each subscriber to provide an access code. If you have paid your 2005 ASSFN dues, and have not received your access code by April 2005, please contact Karger directly (contact: Esther Coscino, email address: e.coscino@karger.ch) to arrange your on-line access.
