ASSFN is excited to share a new multi-part educational series dedicated to advancing knowledge and expertise in epilepsy surgery. Through a series of webinars and companion podcasts, these educational opportunity will dive deep into decision-making, planning, and evolving treatments in the field.
Epilepsy Surgery Part 1: Surgical Decision Making
Fall 2025
The first session will highlight seizure classification, EEG and intracranial EEG interpretation, seizure semiology, surgical candidacy in the dominant hemisphere, and the role of neuropsychological testing and WADA.
A companion podcast will supplement the session with practical insights on how to determine when surgery is the right option.
Epilepsy Surgery Part 2: Intracranial EEG and Surgical Planning
January-February 2026
This webinar will explore SEEG networks, semiology-based planning, SEEG techniques, and the role of grids—including minimally invasive options.
The follow-up podcast will focus on treatment algorithms, the risks and benefits of SEEG, and when to move directly to intervention.
Epilepsy Surgery Part 3: Surgical Treatment Options – Neuromodulation
March-April 2026
Discussion will center on DBS targets (ANT, CM, and others), RNS procedural considerations, and VNS integration, with added insights from neurology on programming challenges.
The podcast will compare neuromodulation methods across focalities, discuss combined resection and neuromodulation strategies, and examine advanced thalamic targeting.
Epilepsy Surgery Part 4: Resective and Ablative Treatments
May-June 2026
This session will cover temporal lobectomy techniques, laser ablation, and less common procedures like hemispherotomy.
The podcast will expand on hemispherectomy indications and outcomes, as well as new applications of LITT in disconnection surgery.
Epilepsy Surgery Part 5: The Future of Epilepsy Surgery
July-August 2026
Looking ahead, this webinar will examine cutting-edge therapies including cell and gene therapy and incisionless approaches.
The accompanying podcast will feature experts discussing neural transplate, focused ultrasound applications, and the promise of next-generation clinical trials.
