Program’s goals and objectives

The Functional Neurosurgery Fellowship at Johns Hopkins is a one year clinical and research fellowship in functional neurosurgery. The primary faculty for the fellowship are Dr. William S. Anderson, Professor of Neurosurgery, and Dr. Shenandoah Robinson, Professor of Pediatric Neurosurgery. Dr. Chetan Bettegowda also serves as faculty for radiosurgery applications, and Dr. Mark Luciano for the treatment of normal pressure hydrocephalus. The fellow will participate in all of the functional neurosurgery cases at Johns Hopkins, including procedures to treat movement disorders, epilepsy, spasticity, and chronic pain, as well as cases associated with active research protocols. Our goal is to provide training in modern functional neurosurgery, including the use of intraoperative robotic systems for SEEG and DBS, intraoperative MRI systems for DBS and laser ablation procedures, and focused ultrasound procedures. Additionally, the fellow will be required to participate in research related to functional neurosurgery, either in the laboratory of Dr. Anderson or Dr. Robinson, or affiliated laboratories in the Departments of Neuroscience or Biomedical Engineering. We ask the fellow to complete at least one manuscript for publication during the fellowship period on either a clinical or research topic. The fellow is also expected to participate in and present at the national neurosurgical meetings. There are two multidisciplinary clinical case conferences that the fellow will attend, the weekly Epilepsy Surgery Conference, and the bimonthly Movement Disorder Surgery Conference. These conferences and treatment committees are staffed by neurologists and neuropsychologists along with Drs. Anderson and Robinson, and the associated faculty will additionally be involved in the fellow’s training. The fellow will attend weekly clinics and participate in examination and workup of preoperative patients, and postoperative care.  Additional opportunities for pediatric Movement Disorders clinic and conference experiences are available if interested.
