Program’s goals and objectives
Our fellowship offers broad training in functional neurosurgery, including treatment of movement disorders (deep brain stimulation, lesioning, spasticity), surgical epilepsy (resections, diagnostic implants, disconnections, neurostimulation, laser ablation), complex pain conditions (cancer pain, brachial plexus injury, stroke, trigeminal neuralgia, trauma induced pain), and psychiatric disorders. Our surgical volume is within the top 3 in the country for DBS, within the top 10 for epilepsy, and we perform numerous procedures for pain on a weekly basis. Together with our engineers, our group has pioneered advanced techniques for frameless stereotaxy and target segmentation and prediction. Our annual surgical volume in functional neurosurgery exceeds 800 procedures.
Beyond clinical training, we believe it is important for fellows to develop an area of research focus that advances a specific area of our field to improve the care of patients with neurological dysfunction. Finally, our goal is to ensure that graduates of our fellowship to have developed the leadership skills to direct a multidisciplinary program in Functional Neurosurgery. We expect these general goals to be manifest as achievement of Milestone Level 5 competency in all areas of functional neurosurgery.
